The book

The Book of Five Rings.

From this edition's description

“This classic text on samurai fighting skills delves into the mental processes and rigorous discipline which underpin this ancient art. Musashi is considered by many to have been one of the greatest swordsmen in history, a famous Japanese samurai whose performance in numerous duels became legendary, even from a very young age.”

“His Book of Five Rings concerns the strategy, tactics and philosophy of his Niten Ichi Ryu style of swordsmanship, and is still studied today as a blueprint for success.”

Edition description
The line everyone quotes

Why a duelling manual sits on business shelves.

Quoted in the edition's description

“On Wall Street, when Musashi talks, people listen.”

Attributed to Time magazine

Musashi wrote the text late in life, around 1645, after a career of duels he is said never to have lost. Most of its length is spent not on the sword but on what sits behind it: discipline, timing, attention and the refusal to be rushed — which is why it transfers so readily out of the dojo.

A note for this audience: John B. Wells is a martial arts instructor as well as a broadcaster. This book did not arrive on the recommendation shelf by chance.

What to read

The shelf behind the broadcast.

Twelve years and 2,800 episodes of guests do not come from nowhere. This shelf is where a good deal of it starts — the books that keep turning up in conversations on the show, recommended because they were useful rather than because somebody was promoting them.

Some are centuries old. Some were published this decade. They are here because they reward the kind of reader who writes things down and goes and checks.

Discipline first

A blueprint for success.
