The benefits of copper peptides in skincare have been documented. Peptides are able to work below the epidermis, which is why they can help generate elastin and collagen deep within skin tissues rather than sitting on the surface.
The biochemistry is well described: copper is a cofactor for the enzyme lysyl oxidase, which catalyses the oxidation of certain lysine and hydroxylysine residues. The peptidyl aldehydes that result become the active centres for cross-link formation in collagen and elastin. In short — the synthesis of mature elastin and collagen is controlled in part by the availability of copper.
